Mexico City made a big move in implementing a gender-neutral school uniform policy.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum made an announcement that students attending state schools are no longer limited to wearing gender-specific uniforms.

“Boys can wear skirts if they want and girls can wear trousers if they want,” Mayor Sheinbaum said.

On a Facebook post, the mayor also said:

[Translated] It’s been dozens of years that in an act of freedom women decided to wear pants. Today is a common garment. We gave today freedom so that girls can wear pants as part of their school uniform. Before the skirt was mandatory. We are in the st century.

This is not the first time that the city made a bold initiative in introducing liberal norms. In 2010, it became the first area in Mexico to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Many other states followed suit and have legalized it too.

In May, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he would push for same-sex marriage to be made legal across the country.

What do you think of this gender-neutral school uniform policy? Should this be embraced in the Philippines?
