It looks like the Philippines is a clean country to live in. In the 2018 World Air Quality Report released by IQAir AirVisual, 11 cities from the Philippines made it to the top 15 cleanest in Southeast Asia.

Calamba (1st), Valenzuela (2nd), Carmona (3rd), Paranaque (5th), Davao (6th), Makati (7th), Manila (8th), Mandaluyong (9th), Balanga (12th), Quezon City (13th), Las Pinas (15th) made it to the list. They are joined by Satun (4th), Narathiwat (11th), and Nan (14th) in Thailand, and Singapore (10th).

According to the report, the source of pollution in Southeast Asia are caused by open burning and vehicular emissions.

The data aggregates and validates real-time data from governments and monitors operated by individuals and organizations. It measures cleanliness by PM2.5, or fine particulate matter. Particulate matter is made up of solid particles and liquid droplets in the air, and is a combination of aerosols, smoke, fumes, dust, ash, and pollen. The particles considered as “fine” are 2.5 microns in diameter and less, and penetrates the respiratory system further than larger particles.

The report adds that pollution contributes to an estimated 7 million premature deaths per year. It represents the world’s 4th leading contributing cause of early deaths, and burdens the global economy with an estimated annual cost of $225 billion (roughly P11.7 trillion).

Globally, the Philippines ranks the 48th most polluted country in the world (out of 73), with a 14.6 level of PM2.5, or moderate. According to the report, moderate means “Sensitive individuals should avoid outdoor activity as they may experience respiratory symptoms.”
