Top Gun 2 is Definitely Happening and Will Start Filming Soon

Fans of the 1986 film Top Gun, we have great news for you: Top Gun 2 is finally confirmed, and they will start shooting soon. And the best part? Tom Cruise will be back to play the role of Maverick Mitchell!

Cruise revealed the news on an Australian talk show while promoting his upcoming film The Mummy. When the host asked if the rumors of a Top Gun sequel is true, the actor laughed and said, “It’s true. It is definitely happening.”

In the past, Cruise would only hint of a possibility, but this is the first time he has confirmed the news.

The host then asked when it will be released, and Cruise answered, “We’re going to start filming it probably in the next year.”

Rumors of a sequel have been swirling since 2010. However, it was pushed back when the original film’s director Tony Scott passed away in 2012. The following year, everyone involved in the film expressed interest, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer saying, “For 30 years we’ve been trying to make a sequel and we’re not going to stop. We still want to do it with Tom and Paramount are still interested in making it.”

Last year, Cruise said he and Bruckheimer are “trying to figure it out.”

Top Gun tells the story of Maverick Mitchell, a navy pilot stationed at the Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. There, he loses the coveted top gun award, but attempts to redeem himself at a tense international crisis.

There’s no word what the sequel will be about, but Bruckheimer told the Huffington Post that it will revolve around drones. He said, “The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones? Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay.”
