DOST To Implement FREE Public Wi-Fi NATIONWIDE

Free Wi-Fi

From being known as the “selfie capital” and “social networking capital” of the world, this really proves how connected the country is with the internet!

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is taking on a new project to implement free public Wi-Fi across the entire country, which will supposedly start in July this year, according to GMA News.

According to the report, places such as plazas, airport terminals, hospitals, schools, piers, and government offices will be turned into Wi-Fi hotspots, with an average speed of 256 kbps.

The report also cites IT experts’ views that the project will help people in the provinces in terms of education, and provide them access to government databases. It also provides a cheaper alternative to long-distance phone calls.

The report also says that bidding for private partnerships will also start this month, as the project would need to rent certain facilities and infrastructure. IT experts also reportedly say that the Philippines being an archipelago may also cause some problems in carrying out the free Wi-Fi project, as other countries already had high-speed internet before they were able to provide free internet for all.

But perhaps for a country that loves to go online, this is probably a good start!

What do you think of the DOST project? Are you in favor of free Wi-Fi for all?
