Smartphone Super Sale Ends With Angry Customers and the Police

The promo that went viral on social media

We Filipinos love a good sale. The thrill of bargaining and finding a good piece for a fraction of its original cost is like finding the Holy Grail. So how do you think the public would react if a smartphone originally priced at P11,999 was sold for P1,999? Madness, right? Now imagine if that smartphone ran out while hundreds are still waiting.

That’s what happened when a ZTE kiosk in SM North EDSA participated in a super sale last night for the ZTE Grand X2 L, whose price was slashed from P11,999 to P1,999. Originally, the sale was planned to be held from 2-6PM, but hours before the end of the sale, mobile units ran out. It got so crazy that the kiosk was barricaded with steel bars, managers offered freebies, and get this: the Quezon City Police District was called in to handle the situation. Now that is crazy.

It turned out that for the seven participating kiosks, only 100 units will be available for sale in each location. The participating stores were: SM North EDSA, SM City Fairview, SM Southmall, SM Sta. Mesa, Tutuban Mall, Luckygold Plaza-Pasig, and GMall-Davao.

The ZTE Grand X2 L is a dual-sim Android (4.2 Jellybean) phone with a 5.5 inches display, 1.3 GHz Quad Core MediaTek MTK6582 processor, 1GB RAM, and 4GB expandable memory via microSD up to 32 GB. It has Wi-Fi connectivity, 3G, Bluetooth, GPS, and  A-GPS.

According to some shoppers, the promo seen around social media should have said there would only be limited quantities.
