Bombay Bicycle Club Live in Manila: The Perfect Hideout

Bombay Bicycle Club Live in Manila: The Perfect Hideout

Pouring as it was in Manila did not stop rock fans to gather at World Trade Center last night. For the first time, Bombay Bicycle Club was to perform in the Philippines and fans of the said indie band definitely wouldn’t miss it.

“It’s alright now, I don’t wanna wait, It’s alright now, I don’t wanna wait…” That’s what I sang to myself as I waited for Bombay Bicycle Club to come out, hoping it would be the first song they would sing.

She’s Only Sixteen, one of our very own OPM bands,  was first up and they gave the crowd a good warmup. The band was excited themselves to watch the English indie rock band perform.

They had their volume up and their energy high, getting everyone’s grooves on and their feet to dancing.

Short as their performance was, the audience cheered them on and waited ecstatically for Bombay Bicycle Club to step in and take the stage.

“Here comes the doubt to shut the sunlight out. I feel the brunt, and I keep the world away to be asleep throughout the day is all I want…” was how it really started (Lyrics from their song “Overdone.”) Seconds before that, people were screaming, shouting, jumping, raising their hands in excitement, that they can finally witness with their own eyes and ears Bombay Bicycle Club Live! in person!

Guitars jamming, lead and bass guitars grooving, drums slamming, just the intro of “Overdone” the first song they sang, from their recent album “So Long, See You Tomorrow” was enough to jumpstart the fans of Bombay Bicycle Club.

Indie, a type of music genre that not everyone understands probably because it is far from mainstream, is what makes attending such concerts more fun. There’s a certain niche that comes to the show and will make people dance like nobody was watching.

With an audience not as crowded as usual big rock bands draw in, watching Indie bands perform is like having a party with a few close friends. You cherish and enjoy and savor each moment because it is intimate.

The soothing voice of Jack Steadman, the lead vocals, was to die for. It sounded better live than recorded. But even as he spoke and said how they’ve been excited to come to Manila for months, man, that gave me the conclusion that this artist’s voice is wow, just wow.

Their music genre not limited to indie, either, but has a mix of acoustic, electronic, folk and world genres. It was awesome  to see them come in strong and upbeat and then lead the audience through a roller coaster with their music.

As they played “Luna” a really upbeat single from their recent album, people were jumping and dancing even more. It was like dancing under the moonlight with all of the fantastic lights happening onstage.

Liz Lawrence was their back up female vocals and their voices blended so very well, it gave me the chills and made mewant to cry. As they sang “Home by Now” a song one would usually listen to when they’re alone in their room moping or simply contemplating like nothing else mattered, everyone fell silent.
