Fellow Ozians, let us be glad! Let us be grateful and let us rejoicify — Wicked is officially the second-highest grossing Broadway musical of all time!
The musical, based on Gregory Maguire’s novel about the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, surpassed The Phantom of the Opera with $1.12 billion in tickets sales, according to reports!
The Phantom of the Opera has been running since 1998, and has earned $1.11 billion. Meanwhile, Wicked has only been on Broadway since 2003, so that means that Wicked managed to edge over Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical in sales with less time!
Wicked’s feat is getting even closer to Broadway’s highest-grossing musical, The Lion King, which has earned $1.38 billion since opening in 1997.
Nothing’s stopping this musical from becoming popular, indeed!
The original Broadway cast starred Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. A movie version of Wicked is expected to be released in 2019.
