Lady Gaga’s weird style and antics overshadowed her greatest gift: an incredible singing voice. But she’s gradually shedding her meat dress and her lobster headdress and showing off her golden pipes, which we fully-appreciated in a hair-raising performance of The Sound of Music‘s “The Hills Are Alive” at the Academy Awards in 2015. She’s fully embracing being normal with a collaboration with Tony Bennett and an emotional performance of “Til It Happens to You” at the following year’s Academy Awards.

In the newly-released music video of “Perfect Illusion,” we see Gaga taking on a new direction, with the singer wearing normal clothes (no lobster shoes here!) and letting the viewer appreciate her voice.

According to Mark Ronson, who co-wrote the song, “It’s some of my favorite music I’ve ever worked on. It’s like this different side of her voice that I guess I never really heard before. Because the songs are so personal, it’s quite husky and wounded and not as maybe massive as some of the other recordings. It’s a voice that gives you a hug almost.”

The song has the trademarks that Gaga fans love: strong vocals and a danceable beat reminiscent of The Fame Monster, Gaga’s sophomore album.

“Perfect Illusion” is the lead single off her upcoming album Joanne, named after her aunt who passed away due to lupus 12 years before Gaga was born. According to Gaga, she had a strong connection to her Aunt Joanne, saying, “It’s everything about Joanne … it’s all the toughness of the pain of losing her that made us all strong and made us who we are. She is the woman of my past who is becoming and helping me bring more of my honest woman self into the future.”

It’s confirmed to contain collaborations with Florence Welch and Father John Misty, while rumors are swirling that Kesha will be part of Joanne, after Gaga supported the singer during her legal battle against Sony and Dr. Luke.

Joanne will be released on October 21.
