Nintendo issued a short statement about the passing of Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who died at the age of 55, due to a “bile duct growth”.

No other details have been released surrounding the Nintendo head’s death.

According to reports, Iwata had undergone surgery sometime last year to remove the bile duct growth.

Iwata was appointed president of Nintendo in 2002, where the company saw growth via the hit release of the Wii console, the Nintendo DS, and the line of Amiibo interactive figurines, according to reports.

A figure in the gaming industry, President Iwata was hugely popular with gaming fans worldwide.
