If you’re dining out in Zamboanga City on the weekend, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to put your phone away. The city government recently launched a “no phone weekend” campaign encouraging diners to enjoy their meals without screens—a move that has sparked a lively discussion online.

Announced through the City Government of Zamboanga’s official Facebook page, the campaign aims to promote quality time among families and friends by creating gadget-free spaces in restaurants and food establishments.
It also hopes to remind both parents and children about the importance of mindful technology use in everyday life.
Many locals welcomed the initiative, seeing it as a refreshing change in a hyperconnected world. “Love this initiative! In a world that is all screens, it’s nice to bring back real conversations and quality time with family,” one Facebook user commented.
Others, however, raised questions about its practicality. “Of all places, why the restaurants and fast food chains? The best place to promote positive family relationships is the home,” another netizen wrote, noting that many people use their phones for work, emergencies, or even just taking photos with friends.
The move has generated a mix of opinions—some viewing it as a meaningful reminder to disconnect, others as an unnecessary restriction on personal choice. As discussions continue online, the initiative is drawing attention to how people balance their digital habits with everyday social interactions.
