September is Alopecia Awareness Month and every year, Alopecia Philippines, a non-profit organization dedicated to this cause and community, holds special campaigns and events to spread disease information and help those affected by it. Alopecia is a hair loss condition that results in partial or complete baldness.
After two years of having virtual gatherings and support groups because of the pandemic, Alopecia Philippines is once again having one of their annual face-to-face gatherings on September 25th entitled, “Onward, Moving Forward!” The theme speaks about rising above the trials and hardships that come with having Alopecia, as well as this new season of us bouncing back from the pandemic.
The event is open to Alopecia Philippines members and their loved ones, free of charge, at Café Lupe Antipolo along Sumulong Highway, from 3-6pm. They will be having talks, games, group activities, giveaways care of Novuhair Nature’s Answer to Hairloss and Lynelle House of Hair Fashion, and snacks to make it a fun, enriching event for everyone. Another new and exciting project by the group is their very own talk show called Alopecia Talk on The New Channel (TNC). Alopecia Philippines Founder and President, Abby Asistio, and Vice President, Coach Ellen Perez host this twice a month show which airs live on the TNC Facebook page and YouTube channel. Each episode tackles relevant topics concerning the Alopecia community such as hair care, wigs, self-love and confidence, bullying, eyebrows and the importance of a support system to name a few. The show also features inspiring stories from those who have triumphed over the disease.
It has been a truly amazing journey for Alopecia Awareness in the country since the group was established in 2013. With awareness comes understanding, compassion and empowerment, and the group hopes that through their consistent efforts, more and more Filipinos with the condition would know that they are not alone, they are supported, and that it is indeed possible to rise above Alopecia.
