YOU GUYS: Sense8 is Returning For a Two-Hour Finale!

Why the Cancellation of Sense8 is Unusual (and What the Internet Has to Say About It)

Earlier this month, we reported that the hit Netflix show Sense8 has been mysteriously canceled. After two short seasons and a strong fandom, the streaming platform announced that it would cancel the show without a clean finale. Fans were disappointed, and a Renew Sense8 website and a Change.org petition were quickly mobilized. The petition gathered half a million signatures.

Sadly, Netflix won’t return the show. In a statement, they said, “To our Sense8 family… We’ve seen the petitions. We’ve read the messages. We know you want to #RenewSense8, and we wish we could #BringBackSense8 for you. The reason we’ve taken so long to get back to you is because we’ve thought long and hard here at Netflix to try to make it work but unfortunately we can’t.  Thank you for watching and hope you’ll stay close with your cluster around the world. #SensatesForever.

It looks like fans will have a consolation prize: Sense8 will be getting the finale it deserves and it will be two hours long!

The news was announced by co-creator Lana Wachowski, who wrote a letter tweeted by Sense8. According to the tweet, “Death doesn’t let you say goodbye. 2 hour finale episode in the works. Tell your cluster.”

The show, developed by The Wachowskis (who wrote and directed The Matrix Trilogy), tells the story of eight sensates from around the world who are mentally and emotionally linked. It was praised for its international cast, as well as for tackling issues not commonly explored in TV, like politics, identity, sexuality, gender, and religion. Critics loved it, too, with Rotten Tomatoes saying that its second season maintains its stunning visuals, Wachowski wackiness, and great heart.”

The two-hour finale will premiere next year.
