If you’re looking for new content to watch during the enhanced community quarantine, here’s something you should check out: the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) will stream Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady, an original Filipino musical written by Carlo Vergara and directed by Chris Martinez. CCP will be streaming the original one act play, which was first staged in Virgin Labfest in 2013.
The story follows Mely, a labandera, and her sister Viva as they go on a mission to save the world. Yes, it’s a superhero story!
It has received rave reviews, with Lea Salonga saying that it offers “a glimpse to what is possible in the future, where the original Pilipino musical is seen as just, if not more, fantastic face to face with shows from Broadway or the West End.”
The production that will be streamed will star Kiki Baento as Mely, Hans Eckstein as Leading Man, and Skyzx Labastilla as Viva. It will be streamed for one week on CCP’s official YouTube channel, starting May 7 at 3PM.
After the success of its original staging, Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady was restaged at the following year’s Virgin Labfest, then turned into a full-length musical with music added by composer Vincent de Jesus. The musical will be turned into a movie, to be produced by Regal Films. It will star Angeline Quinto, Sam Milby, Lovi Poe, Markki Stroem, and Solenn Heussaff.
