WHO Takes Back Advice to Avoid Ibuprofen if Experiencing COVID-19 Symptoms

The World Health Organization (WHO) has redacted their earlier advice against taking ibuprofen for people who are experiencing symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

They shared on their official Twitter account new advice on the use of anti-inflammatories in managing COVID-19 symptoms. “Based on currently available information, WHO does not recommend against the use of ibuprofen,” WHO tweeted.

“We are consulting with physicians treating the patients & are not aware of reports of any negative effects, beyond the usual ones that limit its use in certain populations,” they further explained. “WHO is not aware of published clinical or population-based data on this topic.”

WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier had previously responded to concerns from French Health Minister Olivier Veran that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen COVID-19 symptoms.

“In the meantime, we recommend using rather paracetamol, and do not use ibuprofen as a self-medication,” was WHO’s initial advice.
