Luxury brands are known for selling upscale versions of everyday things at high prices, so it’s no surprise that Balenciaga is reportedly offering this towel for $3,150 or roughly P176,352.

This towel was presented at the Autumn Winter 2022 show last March, but it is making the rounds again online after Highsnobiety posted it on Instagram recently with the alleged price.

According to the platform, “Balenciaga continues to drop pieces with head-turning prices as its towel look is expected to release in stores later this year. This Balenciaga towel was featured on the snowy Winter 2022 runway. Rumored to be priced at US$3,150, this style comes in three colors.”

A commentary on social and global issues

The Balenciaga Autumn Winter 2022 show was “presented on an infinite white field, encapsulated with a protective glass screen.” According to the brand, “in this real-life 3-D live stream with a 360° view, we observe the idea of a season as we once knew it. Just as a souvenir snow globe preserves a memory, the impending present plays out within a manufactured storm, mapping past winters onto the next.”

Reports say that the presentation is a commentary on the climate crisis and the Ukraine war. Models walked down a white field amid a man-made snowstorm that got progressively worse. The audience was seated behind a glass wall.

According to Demna Gvasalia, the brand’s creative director, “This show needs no explanation, it is a dedication to fearlessness, to resistance, and to the victory of love and peace.”

He added, “The war in Ukraine has triggered the pain of a past trauma I have carried in me since 1993 when the same thing happened in my home country and I became a forever refugee.”

Gvasalia, a Georgian fashion designer, fled his home country in 1993 during the Georgian civil war. He spent two years in Ukraine before moving to Germany.

The Balenciaga Autumn Winter 2022 show ended with ensembles featuring the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

During the show, Balenciaga also removed most of the content from its Instagram feed, leaving only a photo of the Ukrainian flag. It explained that it will use its page to share information about Ukraine. The account is currently empty.
