Will Facebook Add a Dislike Button

Facebook’s Like button serves a variety of purposes. Besides showing support or enthusiasm over a post, you can use it to acknowledge a message, to end a conversation, or as a valid reply when you’re feeling lazy to type. But sometimes, a Like button may not be enough. Take for example when a friend posts about a breakup or a death. A Like may help to show your support, but some may take it the wrong way, thinking you “like” the sad event. Will a Dislike button help?

Turns out it won’t, according to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. During a question-and-answer with a live audience at the Facebook offices in Northern California, Zuckerberg said that a Dislike button is “not something that we think is good for the world.” According to him, Like and Dislike buttons may turn posts into a voting system. It might also turn off advertisers when users Dislike marketing messages.

What Zuckerberg wants is a series of ways to express more emotions. “We are talking about a right way for people to easily express a broader array of emotions.” He gave examples like empathy, surprise, and laughter.

Right now, there are no plans to create alternative buttons. According to Zuckerberg, “We need to figure out the right way to do it so that it is a force for good and not a force for bad in demeaning the posts that people are putting out there.”

Not exactly good for the ego when someone Dislikes one of your posts. For now, you can express your sentiments over the comments section.
