What Defines a Woman?

She breaks barriers.

Blue Pingoy used to feel like it was necessary to hide her feminine side. Studying aviation, she did her best to avoid standing out and being referred to as “the girl”. But looking back, she now sees that being in a place where she stuck out was actually a sign that she was somewhere where she could contribute a lot. She realized that being in a male-dominated profession meant she could offer a different perspective on things. By breaking cultural expectations, she was able to make her mark.

She believes she is beautiful.

At a young age, Abby Asistio was already aware of the struggles that came with ideals imposed on women. The singer grew up with alopecia, a hair loss disease. With the trend of girls being advertised as beautiful because of their long hair, she found it hard to accept herself. Her condition constantly emphasized that she was different; that it was as if she didn’t belong. As such, she always felt like she wasn’t as good as everyone else, that she would never be enough, and that she was incomplete.

But as she discovered more about herself and her disease, she realized that those were lies that needed deconstructing. Eventually, she started recognizing that being beautiful is a journey, and it starts with seeing one’s own worth. Now, she uses her platform as a singer to advocate for alopecia awareness.

She is adaptive.

Kathleen Yu, the mind behind Rumarocket, shared that her process involved embracing change. During her experience as an entrepreneur, she saw how significant failures were, saying that successes are punctuated by failures. Having this mindset, she constantly challenged herself and combined what she learned throughout the process. For her, every struggle means an opportunity to make things better. With where she is now, she said that it was the moments of pain that made the journey meaningful.

She embraces the journey.

“What are my passions?” This was the question that Audrey Tangonan asked herself while searching for what she should do after graduating. Her journey then unfolded into multiple business adventures. Inevitably, she went through moments of ups and downs, but this led to finding out what she wanted.

Now, she has Sinaya, an endeavor, which is a result of her love for marine life, the environment, and female education. In the process of trials and error, she saw how things led from one thing to another, eventually fulfilling her purpose in an unexpected way. The key lay in constantly working on her ideas, and embracing the journey that came her way.

What defines a woman is none other than herself. Being a woman is not something that can be gauged nor is it a list to be ticked. Rather, women have identities of their own that they build. These women showed how society can’t prove them otherwise.
