Halle Bailey stars as Ariel, the titular mermaid. She is joined by Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina. Several actors are also lending their voices to the movie: Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
The live-action movie is directed by Rob Marshall, who also helmed the film adaptation of the musical Chicago.
Alan Menken, who wrote the score for the original The Little Mermaid, joined Lin-Manuel Miranda in creating the adaptation’s soundtrack. It will feature the beloved songs from the 1989 movie and four new songs.
The Little Mermaid was released to critical acclaim, marking the beginning of what is called the Disney Renaissance, which includes the films The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Mulan, and Tarzan. The Little Mermaid won two Academy Awards the year it was released: Best Score and Best Original Song for “Under the Sea.”
