WATCH Meryl Streep Stars as an Opera Singer Who Can't Sing in Florence Foster Jenkins

Meryl Streep can’t do no wrong. Even if she has singing chops (having starred in the film adaptations of Broadway musicals Mamma Mia! and Into the Woods), she has to pretend to be bad at it, in her new role for Florence Foster Jenkins.

Streep will star as the titular character, a true-to-life New York heiress who dreams of becoming an opera singer even if she is terrible at singing. The film has earned rave reviews, and has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

She will be joined by Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg, Nina Arianda, and Rebecca Ferguson.

Jenkins is notorious in history for her lack of pitch, rhythm, and intonation. In the recordings that exist, her accompanist is heard making adjustments to make up for her shortcomings. Despite this, she became a popular singer during her time.

Florence Foster Jenkins will premiere in August 2016
