It has been five years since critically-acclaimed Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz first wowed film critics all around the world with his four-hour masterpiece Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan (Norte, The End of History) at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Known for his exceedingly long films, Diaz continued showcasing his filmmaking genius through films that would be screened in some of the biggest international film festivals in the industry.

After two years since his last film, Ang Babaeng Humayo (The Woman Who Left), screened at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, Lav Diaz is back with another masterpiece that’s bound to be another cinematic genius.

His upcoming film, Ang Panahon ng Halimaw (Season of the Devil), is set to have its world premiere at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival as part of the main competition.

Ang Panahon ng Halimaw is described to be a rock opera musical film starring Piolo Pascual, Shaina Magdayao, Bituin Escalante, Angel Aquino, and a lot more big names in the film and theater community.

A trailer has been released last Monday. Watch it below:

It definitely looks like a musical I’ve never seen before–a far cry from the musical films with fancy productions and song-and-dance numbers.

This is definitely a Lav Diaz film worth looking out for! It’s set to premiere on February 20, but stay tuned for details on local screenings!
