What a journey it has been for American Idol. Since it premiered in 2002, it has aired 548 episodes, launched the careers of 14 winners (and runners up including Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson, and Chris Daughtry), and spawned spin-offs in 46 regions around the world, including the short-lived Philippine Idol. Last year, it was announced that the 15th season will be their last.

American Idol‘s first winner was Kelly Clarkson, who arguably is the most famous of them all. After winning in 2002, she has released seven albums and 34 singles, headlined seven tours, and won three Grammy Awards, becoming the first act to win the Best Pop Vocal Album twice. Indeed, life is good for Clarkson, who is currently pregnant with her second child.

Life is coming full-circle for Clarkson, as she was invited to perform at the latest episode of American Idol‘s final season. There, she gave an emotional performance of “Piece by Piece,” the third single from her latest album of the same name.

The performance was so emotional that contestant La’Porsha Renae and judge Keith Urban were brought to tears. Clarkson herself had to take several breaks in order to compose herself.

The song “Piece by Piece” is about a mother and her husband putting their child first, even if she grew up with her father abandoning her.
