Famous YouTube Beauty Vlogger, Nikkie Tutorials, has come out as a transgender woman in her newest video posted on Monday, January 13.
Nikkie Tutorials, whose real name is Nikkie de Jager, opened up to her more than 12 million subscribers about her early transition which began at age 7 when she started wearing girls’ clothing. At age 14, she started hormone therapy and took “growth stoppers,” and eventually “fully transitioned” into a woman by age 19. Throughout this period, her mother had been her biggest supporter.
She launched her makeup channel in 2008 around this time as she was completing her transition.
What prompted her public revelation was the many threats she has been receiving about her transition experience being “leaked” to news outlets without her consent. She did not disclose how the threats began or where they came from, but she decided to take control of the situation and come out on her own.
Nikkie also said that she has already shared her story with fiancé Dylan and that they were working through the situation privately.
“I hope that me standing up and being free, it inspires others to do the same” Nikkie said in the 17-minute video. “To truly live your life like you want it and the way you deserve it.”
“I am me. I am still Nikkie. Nothing changes about that,” she added. “The last thing I want in my life is for you to not trust me anymore, or to look at me with different eyes, or look at me in a different manner, or think that I have changed.”
“At the end of the day, my story is beautiful. All I know is that I haven’t changed.”
