The Walking Mushroom: Greek Out on Some Delicious Authentic Moussaka

One underrated dish that my family and I absolutely love is moussaka. This Greek delicacy is an eggplant- or potato-based dish that often includes ground meat, and is kind of like lasagna… except it looks, tastes, and feels healthier. Or at least that’s our justification for eating so much of it when we tasted the delicious authentic moussaka from The Walking Mushroom.

Like many others, Donna and Jeffrey Sy’s printing business was brought to a halt during the pandemic and they thought of backup plans on how to survive these trying times. Donna has always loved cooking for her family and one day, while sitting down to have some moussaka, Jeffrey asked, “Why don’t we sell this?”

They immediately starting thinking of a name for their little online shop after that. When their daughter randomly said, “Here comes the walking mushroom” in reference to her 2-year-old sibling, they all looked at each other and agreed to use it. Their 13-year-old son drew the logo.

Traditionally, moussaka is served with just eggplants and potatoes. However, if you don’t like eggplants, you can get zucchini instead. I got a mix of both because, well, why not? And I have to say: it was downright delicious! All of the ingredients came together perfectly for intense flavor. Even my daughter, who normally doesn’t eat vegetables, fell in love with this moussaka.

The Walking Mushroom only uses premium and fresh ingredients. They even grind their meat at home because Donna admits to being paranoid and not trusting ground meat from anyone else anymore. :p Fun fact: Donna is a Filipina who grew up in Greece, which is where she learned the love for authentic moussaka. And we are oh-so-lucky that she has decided to share that love with her customers.

The Walking Mushroom only bakes their food when they get orders, and they deliver the food an hour after baking to ensure quality and warmth. Their moussaka has absolutely no preservatives in it, either, and can last in the fridge for up to five days (though it definitely won’t last that long – trust me!). To reheat it, simply microwave a piece until the bechamel is soft again.

The Walking Mushroom’s moussaka is available in two sizes: Sharing, which serves four pax, and Family, which serves 6 to 8 pax. They deliver within Metro Manila and anywhere serviceable by Lalamove, Grab, and HappyMove.

“Moussaka can lift up your spirit,” Donna adds. “It is a work of art cooked with love and attention to detail.” Aside from their delicious and addicting moussaka (which is also available in a lamb version, by the way), they also have lamb and beef ragu on linguine available! They will be introducing vegetarian moussaka soon, too. We can’t wait to try them all!!!
