Wait, Is Robert Downey Jr. Really Returning As Iron Man In Black Widow?

Deadline nearly got away with dropping a huge bomb and going unnoticed. In a report on the Saturn Awards they casually mentioned that everyone’s favorite genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist would be making a last appearance in the upcoming Black Widow movie. And it was only noticed a few days later by readers and media sites!

After stating Downey’s award of best actor in a film they mentioned: “Downey will be seen in the role of Stark one more time, however, in the Marvel prequel Black Widow in May 2020.”

However, it is likely that RDJ’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) won’t actually be a return. With his resolve to “distance himself” from the MCU any role he would play would probably be nothing more than a cameo. More than that, it seems likely that even a cameo would come from recycled or unused footage.

A popular fan theory is that the cameo will make use of a deleted scene from Captain America: Civil War. Since Black Widow is estimated to take place sometime after the events of Civil War it would make sense for them to do so. The specific scene is of Tony telling Natasha to “run” following the final confrontation.
