Vigan is One of the New7Wonder Cities of the World!
After months of campaigning and voting, the Philippine city of Vigan has been declared one of the New7Wonders Cities in the world.
Vigan is one of the new seven winners, after 1,200 nominees from 220 countries around the world. According to Bernard Weber, founder and president of New7Wonders contest, “We have 7 that represent the global diversity of urban society. For the first time in human history, more than half of our planet’s population lives in cities and this election emphasises the dramatically challenging character of our changing world.”
Despite being a city, Vigan still has the old-world charm, preserving its cobblestone streets, Oriental building designs, and European architecture. A visit here feels like stepping back in time, while keeping up with modern amenities. It is also a World Heritage Site.
After Vigan was nominated for the New7Wonders Cities, they were checked, validated and independently verified. After the verification process, the organizers worked with the confirmed cities to organize official inauguration events.
Vigan is joined by Beirut (Lebanon), Doha (Qatar), Durban (South Africa), Havana (Cuba), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and La Paz (Bolivia).
After being announced, Weber said, “We congratulate each of these cities on achieving their New7Wonders status, and we look forward to celebrating their election to the ‘canon of 7’ with their citizens in 2015,” Weber said. “The New7Wonders Cites will now join the New7Wonders of Nature and the New7Wonders of the World in becoming part of Global Memory for humanity for ever.”
