This coming May 17, the University of the Philippines Surgical Society (UPSS) will be launching the first-ever Surgical Summit: The Surgeon’s Playbook, to be held at the Medical Sciences Building of the UP Manila College of Medicine, Pedro Gil St., Ermita, Manila.
As a celebration of surgical practice—past, present, and future—the Surgical Summit blends together an age-old discipline with future-oriented modern perspectives, which enshrine in its participants the technical skills and collaborative mindset central to the surgeon’s toolkit.
“For the longest time, you’d only get to interact with surgeons either when you enter med school or if you know one personally,” remarked UPSS President Adrian Zapata, eagerly anticipating the launch of the inaugural event. “I believe the summit is a very good opportunity to meet experts in the cutting fields, especially if you’re considering it as a career choice.”
The day-long event will open with plenary talks from decorated surgeons well into their practice, as they discuss trailblazing new perspectives in the field—from celebrating surgery as both a science and an art to paving paths for women surgeons to prosper in the industry. The morning sessions will conclude with a panel discussion from different surgical subspecialties as they provide their unique insights on surgical practice today.
The Surgical Summit’s afternoon sessions will feature a dynamic workshop honing the most fundamental yet crucial skills in the life of a surgeon. Whether it’s stitching up incisions, controlling bleeding wounds, or even conducting laparoscopic surgery itself, these workshops are guaranteed to dazzle those with the zeal to learn.
Prospective participants can register through https://bit.ly/SurgicalSummit2025 for the price of Php 350 (Operating) or Php 200 (Observing). Slots for the exclusive laparoscopy trainer station are also limited and issued on a first-come, first-served basis. The UP Surgical Society, the youngest organization within the UP College of Medicine, is at the forefront of spreading the passion for surgery among medical students—both as a field of learning and as a professional practice. Through never-ending skills development and community-oriented socio-civic initiatives, it fosters within its members a commitment to constant growth, camaraderie born through mutual trust and respect, and an eagerness to serve the underserved.
