Ugnay 2025: Philippine Media & Information Literacy Summit Returns with Focus on AI and Ethical Media Use

On November 8, the Philippine media and information literacy (MIL) community will gather at the Gimenez Gallery, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, for Ugnay: Philippine Media & Information Literacy Summit — a nationwide conference promoting critical thinking, ethical digital practices, and responsible media engagement.

Organized by Out of The Box Media Literacy Initiative (OOTB), this marks the second iteration of the Philippine Media & Information Literacy Summit, following its inaugural run in 2023. The summit will feature a wide array of interactive exhibits, educational booths, and expert-led talks on media and information literacy, with a special focus on the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in content creation and consumption.

The summit will bring together OOTB’s long-time civil society partners, including Break the Fake Movement (BTFM), Movement Against Disinformation (MAD), Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC), MIL ASEAN Network, Philippine Association for Media and Information Literacy (PAMIL), and more. Confirmed speakers from Microsoft and the Embassy of Finland will lead discussions on the role of AI in shaping the daily lives of Filipinos and share European best practices in MIL work.

The sessions are designed for both the general public and MIL advocates, including educators, students, and industry professionals.

A highlight of the event is Ugn[ai]y, a nationwide media and information literacy content creation competition that challenges participants to produce original works exploring the ethical use of AI in media. Submissions include short-form videos and graphic designs that delve into responsible AI applications across different aspects of life.

In addition to the summit, a series of closed-door multi-sectoral dialogues will be held in the weeks surrounding the event. These sessions aim to develop a national media and information literacy framework, bringing together educators, policymakers, journalists, and civil society organizations to co-create a roadmap for inclusive and sustainable media literacy education across the country.
