Iconic Building in Shibuya Crossing That Closed Down Announces Reopening Date

Remember that iconic building in Shibuya that once housed a Starbucks that offered a scenic view of the Shibuya Scramble which unfortunately closed down last November 2023? Well, that building, which is actually a branch of Tsutayaโ€”a bookstore selling a variety of media including books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, and moreโ€”is officially reopening this April 2024 with a new look!

This Tsutaya branch closed down temporarily for renovations following a “significant decline in demand for the storeโ€™s rental goods in recent years,” according to a report from SoraNews24. The Starbucks branch was a casualty since it was located on the first and second floors of the building. Now, armed with a revamped and modernized logo, Tsutaya will open its doors once more on April 25 with plenty of changes.

One of these changes is the removal of the CD and DVD rental floors which leaves more space and opportunities for the bookstore chain to hold events. They are also planning to dedicate some floors to selling “a variety of products from around the world, from entertainment such as animation and music to high-end brands” and for pop-ups. They will also be building a Cafรฉ & Lounge with seating for 500 people.

It is unknown if the Starbucks found in this branch will also reopen.
