Trump Wants to Crackdown on Video Games in Light of Recent Mass Shootings

On Saturday, August 3, a shooter killed 20 people in a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas. According to the Independent, authorities have said that the shooting appeared to be a racially motivated hate crime. Not even a day later, after just a couple of hours, another gunman killed nine people in Dayton, Ohio.

US President Donald Trump has come out to say that violent video games are partly to blame for these mass shootings. During his speech at the wake of the shootings, he told the press that people should “stop the glorification of violence in our society”. Apparently, this includes video games.

“It is too easy today for troubled youth to surround themselves with a culture that celebrates violence. We must stop or substantially reduce this, and it has to begin immediately,” Trump said during the conference.

This isn’t the first time that President Trump blamed video games for mass shootings. In 2018, he spoke about not only violence in video games but in movies as well.

There has been no solid connection between violent behavior and violent video games. According to the Independent, in February, a study reported that there’s no evidence that proves that people who play violent video games are likely to induce real-world aggressive behavior.

President Trump has not given any details on the video game crackdown he’s planning or how he will go about implementing it.
