Trans Beauty Vlogger NikkieTutorials on Meeting Ellen DeGeneres: ‘Never Meet Your Idols’

Well-known YouTube beauty vlogger NikkieTutorials who made headlines this year for coming out as transgender had a few things to say about her experience on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, particularly with its host Ellen DeGeneres.

NikkieTutorials, whose real name is Nikkie De Jager, appeared on the television show in January to open up about her emotional coming out video. However, she spilled to &C Magazine that the fun atmosphere we see on television isn’t exactly how it really is in real life.

“Maybe I’m being naive, but I expected them to welcome me with confetti: ‘Welcome to The Ellen DeGeneres Show!'” she said. “But instead I got greeted by an angry intern, who was a bit overworked. I expected a Disney show, but I got a ‘Teletubbies After Dark.'”

She added that every guest on Ellen but her had their own private toilet. “I couldn’t even use the closest toilet to me because it was reserved for the Jonas Brothers.”

While she did admit that her interview on Ellen gave fans and viewers “a good summary” of her story, she and a lot of people who knew her expected so much more.

“After being on Ellen I thought to myself, ‘don’t meet your heroes,'” she confessed.

In a previous interview on a Dutch talk show, Nikkie also talked about how “cold and distant” Ellen actually was when the cameras were turned off.

“Let me say that there’s a big difference between this show and Ellen DeGeneres, and I’m saying that in favor of this show,” Nikkie said, according to a translation by YouTuber Sebastian Williams. “It’s nice that you say ‘hi’ before the show. She didn’t.”

She shared that while it was a “huge honor” to be on the show, “it wasn’t as nice as I thought.”
