Toy Story writer debunks tragic dad back story

If your heart has been ripped into pieces just days ago over the supposed tragic Toy Story back story about Andy’s dad, then this should help you feel better. Toy Story writer Andrew Stanton just debunked the entire back story, saying that it wasn’t true!

To recap, Toy Story toy consultant Mike Mozart shared the heartbreaking story about Andy’s dad, as relayed to him by former Pixar head-writer Joe Ranft, who passed away in 2005. If you recall, Andy’s father is not featured in any of the films. Contrary to popular belief that Andy’s parents are divorced, as it turns out, Andy’s father, who is also named Andy, supposedly died of polio! Andy Senior supposedly contracted polio as a child, and died of the illness when he was an adult and married with kids. To disinfect his things, his toys were burned, except Woody and a few others, because he crawled out of bed to save them!

Mozart continued that Woody was actually Andy’s dad’s toy first, and on his deathbed, he asked his son to go to the attic and open a box of toys that contained Woody. When Andy came back with the toys, however, his dad passed away.

Tragic, we know! But Andrew Stanton completely called out the story in one swift tweet:

Is it time for a prequel, then?
