Rufa Mae Quinto may be an icon, but the actress reveals that she used to be bullied by her fellow celebrities.
In an interview to promote her film And Ai Thank You with Ai Ai delas Alas, she said that she was often bullied because she wasn’t good at speaking English. She said, “Noon kasi yung mga ka-batch ko puro Fil-Am, yung mga panahon na hirap na hirap akong mag-English. Hindi ako maka-English kaya parang inapi-api ako. Sabi ko, ‘Ay ganun.’”
(“My batchmates were Fil-Am and that was the time I was struggling with my English. I couldn’t speak English so it was like they were bullying me. I said, “okay.”)
Quinto added, “Tapos may isang artista, binully din ako. Pa-English-English siya. ‘How are you, atchu-chucu-chu.’ Nakatingin lang ako sa kanya, wala ako masabi kasi hindi ako marunong mag-English.”
(“There was one celebrity who bullied me by talking to me in English.‘How are you, atchu-chucu-chu.’ I was just looking at that person and I couldn’t answer because I didn’t speak English.”)
However, she was able to move on by forgetting about it. She said, “Eh, ano ngayon kung mali-mali yung English ko? Oh, ngayon yon yung naging hugot ko, awang Diyos binigyan ako ng asawang Inglisero.”
(“So what if I can’t speak English? Look at me now, my husband is an English-speaker.”)
In the interview, Quinto told reporters it was why she quit showbiz. She told them, “Totoo yan, kung bakit din ako umalis sa showbiz kasi parang, ano ba naman itong mga ‘to? Para akong nasa dinosaur place, maraming tarantula and everything. Parang hindi ko na alam kung sino ba yung kausap ko talaga.”
(“It was why I left showbiz. I felt like I was in a dinosaur place with tarantulas and everything. I didn’t know who I was really speaking to.”)
She was referring to people who talk about her behind her back.
Quinto did not reveal who the bullies were, saying that she has forgotten about it and chose to forgive them.
