I love Mother’s Day. I really do. I love how every Mother’s Day my Facebook feed fills with pictures of my awesome friends as innocent babies hugging their equally awesome mothers I know as “tita”. And I love the scanned copies of old photographs from dusty albums that suddenly reappear—pictures ranging from the hot mommas to the grandmas with the twinkle in their eyes—like a parade of the most beautiful women in the world. Real, honest, human beauty. And above all I love the stories. The stories that go along as captions to these photos. The childhood memories, the uncalled-for fights that now seem so silly, the embarrassing stories…all the anecdotes. And the sudden profession of those three words that don’t get said as much as they should: “I love you.”
You’ve heard it probably a million times your entire life, but it doesn’t make it any less true—without our mother’s we wouldn’t be here. We would be nothing. We owe, literally, everything we are to them.
