Many celebrities have screen names, but there are those who use the ones they were born with. Anne Hathaway is one of those stars who use their birth names professionally. The thing is, she doesn’t like being called Anne.
The subject was brought up during an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
She told the host that no one in her personal life calls her Anne. According to Hathaway, “The only person who calls me Anne is my mother and she only does it when she’s really mad at me, like really mad,” she said. “So every time I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me.”
She added, “Call me Annie — everybody, everybody, call me Annie, please.“
So why is everyone in the industry (and her fanbase) calling her Anne?
It started when she was 14 years old.
Hathaway told Fallon, “When I was 14 years old, I did a commercial, and I had to get my SAG card and they asked me, ‘What do you want your name to be?’ Well, it should be my name. My name’s Anne Hathaway.’ So that seemed like the right choice, but it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life, people will call me Anne.“
A SAG card is a membership to the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or the SAG-AFTRA, described as “the most distinguished entertainment and media union in the world.”
Because people who know her personally know that she doesn’t like being called Anne, those on set have become creative when calling her.
“People call me Miss H, people call me Hath, so feel free, call me anything but Anne.”
Hmmm. Maybe we’ll start calling her Queen of Genovia?
