Tips and Tricks I’ve Learned from Glamourbox’s Personal Makeup Workshop with Au Mauricio

As the content writer of Glamourbox (and a certified Glambabe), an online beauty subscription service and boutique that offers quirky yet superior brands from all over the globe, I was lucky to have been part of the Personal Makeup Workshop last Saturday, August 3, in Bottega Studio along Katipunan Extension—which featured the Glamourbox Special Edition Box, showcasing a colorful and vivid line of beauty products by Avon.

The workshop was taught by Celebrity Makeup Artist, Paula “Au” Mauricio, who was trained and educated in California in 2008. Some of her clients include America’s Next Top Model Cycle 18 British Invasion Winner: Sophie Sumner, America’s Next Top Model All-Stars Cycle 17 Contestants: Allison Harvard and Dominique Reighard, Asia’s Next Top Model Mentor Model: Joey Mead, and local celebrities: Giselle Tongi, Gwen Zamora, Rhian Ramos, Jess Kienle, and Isabelle Daza.

In the four hours that Au taught us, here are just some of the tips and tricks I’ve learned when it comes to putting on makeup. These tips are so useful, they should be turned into Beauty Commandments for every female.

1. Beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin.

The key to good-looking makeup, naturally, is to have good-looking skin. So always take care of your skin and religiously follow your regimen.

Try to stick to a brand or product that your skin is used to, or that you can trust. Sometimes, when you experiment with different brands or products, your skin can react to it negatively—causing breakouts or allergies.

2. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

This is a MUST! Because we live in a tropical country, it’s understandable why many of us fail to use moisturizers—we don’t like the sticky, heavy feeling it leaves. But did you know that moisturizing helps fight skin aging, and hydrates the skin after a tiring, stressful day? Make it a habit! Also, for those with oily skin, here’s a fun fact: Moisturizing in the evening actually helps lessen the oil! Avon came up with Anew Vitale Night Cream, ideal for women in their mid-20’s. It comes in a cute, pink glass jar, smells delicious, and leaves the skin soft and supple.

Because of its potent ingredients, you can see its effects in just two weeks!

3. Wear sunblock ALWAYS.

Even when it’s dark and cloudy outside, never forget to apply sunblock—as UV rays are still present no matter what the weather condition is. Avon’s Anew Vitale Day Cream, available in its full size in the Special Edition Box, not just fights skin aging—it also protects the skin from the harmful rays of the sun because of the SPF 25 it contains.

4. Blend and balance to complement.

This applies to all—whether you’re putting on concealer and foundation, doing your eyebrows, or applying your eye shadow and blush. Build it up. Don’t put a lot right away—this could lead to a face that screams, “Scary!

5. Invest in a good brand of foundation and concealer.

Everything else doesn’t have to be as expensive—so as long as you invest in a trusted brand of foundation and concealer, because these are what you put on your entire face. Some recommended brands by Au are NARS Tinted Moisturizer, Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, Bobbi Brown BB Cream, and MAC.

My last and favorite tip:

6. Eyebrows don’t have to be twins.

They just have to be sisters.

This was such a mind-blowing, ground-breaking tip from Au. I personally have a difficult time doing my eyebrows. I can never get them to look perfect. Sometimes it’s too light, sometimes it’s too dark.

But Au made me realize that too perfect can make it look fake—which is why they just have to be “sisters,” not “twins.”

Those are just a few tips I’ve learned, and I’m grateful for Glamourbox for hosting another makeup workshop with Au Mauricio. Some of my classmates included lucky Glamourbox subscribers who won the raffle in attending the workshop for free, and loyal Glambabes who can’t get enough of Glamourbox’s products.
