This Upcoming Movie Starring Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o Started From a Tumblr Post

It’s a meme come true: a Tumblr post that went viral on Twitter will become a full-length film, starring singer Rihanna and Oscar Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.

The Tumblr post by user @elizabitchtaylor showed a photo of the two women sitting next to each other at a Miu Miu fashion show in 2014. According to the caption, “They look like they’re in a heist movie with Rihanna as the tough-as-nails leader/master thief and Lupita as the genius computer hacker.” The post has received almost half a million notes, or a combination of likes and reblogs.

It achieved mainstream fame when it was posted on Twitter last month, with more than 200,000 likes and almost 100,000 retweets.

It’s no longer a joke, as both stars expressed interest in starring in it, along with Selma director Ava DuVernay and Insecure writer Issa Rae.

Reports says that the idea was pitched to studios at the recently-held Cannes Film Festival in France. Netflix was awarded the rights to the film after a bidding. However, there’s no word what it will be about or whether the studio will follow the original story.

Reports add that the film is expected to hit theaters in 2018, after DuVernay finishes adapting Madeleine L’Engle’s novel A Wrinkle in Time.
