Prince William and Kate Middleton have long been inspiring us with their tale of true love: the two met as university students in their alma mater, the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and were in a long-term relationship before they tied the knot in April 2011.
While the dynamic duo have shaken things up when it comes to royal tradition, such as living a relatively more down-to-earth life than royals normally do, they do stick to certain royal conventions — such as refraining from showing public display of affection, especially in comparison to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who seem more comfortable packing on the PDA in public.
While we know that Prince William and Kate are crazy about each other, why is it then that they’re so stiff in public?
According to Vogue, it all has to do with their responsibility as soon-to-be heads of state:
“William and Kate, by nature, have to appear a bit more prim and proper: They are, after all, soon-to-be heads of state, representing a whole people, a whole nation, a whole commonwealth.ย Reports throughout the yearsย suggest William looks to the Queen, the very woman whose job he will inherit, for guidance on how to act in public. The Queen seldom shows affection to Prince Philip in publicโa choice that could be described as a โprotocol,โ but not strong enough to be a downright rule.”
While that may be the case, we know that the two are a lot more relaxed and “normal” behind closed doors — reports suggest that between them, the Duchess calls the Duke of Cambridge a far more down-to-earth nickname: “Babe”.
