Times are definitely tough because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Okada Manila is the latest business to be hit by it.

In an announcement shared by its president, Takashi Oya, the luxury resort will be laying off more than 1,000 employees.

He said, “Okada Manila announces with deep regret that it will be reducing its workforce via a retrenchment program. It is a reality that the Company could not escape because of the new normal that lies ahead of us.”

Oya added, “Not having any revenues since the lockdown has been financially draining and caused severe losses to the Company, and if this is not addressed, its losses will pile up. Okada Manila is also constrained to change the way it does business, which means it will just require a smaller workforce. For it to remain a viable business, it will have to let go of more than 1,000 employees.”

Those who will be affected will receive their notice starting June 15. They are expected to receive a separation pay in accordance to the law.

Oya’s statement also said, “Okada Manila will be parting with extraordinary colleagues with whom it shared the best moments of our life.”
