The fuel, dubbed as “Bio-Gab”, won a Business and Idea Development Award from the Philippine Chamber and Commerce Industry, and was proven to be just as effective as other common petroleum products.

The fuel, extracted from wild gabi, is seen as a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to gasoline for cars. Wild gabi is an inedible crop that grows in abundance.

It took the student-led team two weeks to ferment the taro and extract the oil, where they discovered that the carbohydrates and glucose from the taro could be turned into bio-ethanol.

Sounds like a great alternative fuel to look forward to!
