It is the age of the sequels. Who can blame Hollywood? It’s guaranteed money for them and a feels trip for fans who want to relive their experience watching the original film. The next film to get the treatment is The Incredibles, a 2004 Disney-Pixar animated film about a family of superheroes who quietly lead ordinary lives. It did so well that it received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film in 2005.
The sequel was first announced in 2014, but there are still no details yet, as director and writer Brad Bird told Entertainment Weekly that it would be like “unwrapping presents before Christmas.” He did confirm that the sequel is “actively moving,” which might mean it will meet the target release of June 21, 2019.
Recently, Bird revealed that the sequel is going to take a different direction. He told Cinema Blend:
For me, the interesting thing was never the superhero part of it. It was more the family dynamic, and how do superhero things play into that. So the movie is a step further in that direction – but I do have a story idea that I think is very intriguing, and not like anything else. So my goal would to still be surprising, which is not easy to do, and maybe I’ll succeed, and maybe I won’t! That’s certainly what I’m going to try.
But worry not, as The Incredibles 2 will still have “the same characters and feel. That’s the trick with a sequel. It’s repeating yourself, without repeating yourself.”
Will they probably have capes this time?
