There’s a New “The Karate Kid” Sequel and It’s Going to be a Series!

Karate Kid Sequel

Kids who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s are surely familiar with The Karate Kid, the martial arts drama that followed a teenager’s journey to learning karate. The story will be introduced to a new generation of kids as YouTube Red is producing an online sequel with 10 episodes!

The sequel will be called Cobra Kai and will bring back the original film’s stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. It will be set 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, with Zabka’s character Johnny Lawrence reopening the Cobra Kai karate dojo. The move reignites his rivalry with Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso, who is now successful with his own dojo.

According to Susanne Daniels, global head of original content for YouTube, “The minute I heard about this project, I knew we had to have it. The Karate Kid became an instant classic in the 1980s, and still resonates with audiences around the world and on YouTube today.”

The Karate Kid was released in 1984 to critical and commercial success. It spawned three sequels and a remake in 2010.

The series is expected to premiere in 2018.

YouTube Red is YouTube’s paid streaming service.
