The moon is one of the solar system’s most captivating sights. But which locations in the world provide the best view? Area 52 has looked at seedlists of the best moongazing locations across the world and analyzed Instagram hashtags to see which locations are the most popular.
As it turns out, the country that topped the list is in Asia!
Chiang Mai in Thailand is the location that received the most posts on Instagram with over 334,000 posts. Chiang Mai is a city in mountainous northern Thailand, situated in a valley surrounded by mountains that provide a beautiful backdrop with stunning views of the moon. Thailand is also well known for its Full Moon Parties, which is an all-night beach party that originated in Hat Rin on the island of Ko Pha-ngan, Thailand in 1985. The party takes place on the night of, before, or after every full moon mostly attended by tourists and locals.
Second on the list is Tuscany, a region in central Italy that attained over 189,000 posts. Tuscany is rated as one of the best places on Earth to view the night sky as it is far from the city lights, in the valleys on the top of the hills, a great spot to view the Moon’s craters, sunspots, and Jupiter’s satellites.
Third is Shelter Island, a town at the eastern end of Long Island in New York, which has over 175,000 Instagram posts. Shelter Island is one of the best locations to spot the moon and a fantastic spot for reconnecting with nature due to the low amount of street lamps or city lights to interfere with the star and moonlight views.
