The WhenInManila Survival Guide to a Car Accident

If you think Grand Theft Auto is crazy, try driving around Manila. With all the craziness happening on the road, accidents have become a norm. It’s easy to think that they won’t happen to us, but many aren’t prepared when it does. So what should you do when you get involved in one? We have some tips for you!

According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the first thing to do in a car accident is to make sure you and your companions are okay. If someone is hurt, you can call MMDA’s hotline at 136 to request for medical assistance. Whatever happens, don’t panic!

It’s important to not leave the scene of the accident, regardless if it’s a minor one. It’s understandable to feel angry towards the other driver but it’s also important not to go beast mode. Act like the other person is your beshie and exchange contact details like names, addresses, contact numbers, driver’s license numbers, insurance companies, and policy numbers. No need to exchange star signs. See if a deal can be reached. If not, call the MMDA hotline and request for traffic enforcers or investigators to come by.

While waiting, use your selfie-taking skills and take pictures of the accident, including the damaged cars (and license plates) and the surrounding area so the investigator can determine the accident and see who is at fault. Make sure to also note the cars’ make, model, year, and color. Once you have thoroughly documented the scene (VSCO filter optional), move your vehicles to the side of the road so you don’t cause traffic or more accidents. You also don’t want to be recorded and become the next viral sensation. Once the investigator arrives, let him or her handle the situation. Make sure to get his or her name so you can refer to them later when reviewing the details.

Lastly, make sure you get an accident report from the police department, which will help in the insurance claims process. You better have insurance because we can’t help you if you don’t! Having car insurance will give you financial protection, especially when it’s time to pay for vehicle repairs and hospital bills brought by an accident. All you have to do is pay a certain premium to cover you from incidents such as bodily injury, theft, and loss of property, among many others.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) requires all vehicle owners to have the Compulsory Third-Party Liability (CTPL) insurance. This kind of insurance, however, isn’t enough to cover every accident, especially if you’re a daredevil on the road. For better coverage, it’s better to have a comprehensive car insurance. We recommend MoneyMax.ph, an online platform that compares car insurance, credit cards, loans, and broadband plans for free. Its comparison tool lets you look at all kinds of car insurance policies so you can find the best one for you.

To get a free quote, all you need to do is input your car model, your location and car usage, and choose from the cover options available. From there, you can compare personalized results and choose the package that fits your budget and lifestyle.
