Soldier Working as Taxi Driver Offers to Drive Disabled Passenger for Free
For every horror story a Filipino has about taxi drivers in the Philippines, there is one good one. Just when you are about to lose hope, there’s a driver who’ll singlehandedly restore your crumbling faith in humanity. Here’s one example of that.
This story, shared to us on Facebook by Poy Yumping, is inspiring. According to Poy:
I’m a disabled person and I want to share my great experience this morning with this taxi driver. Nag-aabang ako ng taxi with my Mom sa kanto namin dito sa Taguig. 5:00am dumaan si sir at agad namin pinara. Tinigilan niya kami at nagtanong kung saan kami papunta.
(I’m a disabled person and I want to share my great experience this morning with this taxi driver. My mom and I were waiting for a cab near our street in Taguig. At 5:00, a cab passed by and we immediately flagged him down. He asked us where we were going.)
Poy told the driver that they were going to the Philippine Orthopedic Center, but the driver said he was about to end his shift. But just when the driver was about to reject them, this happened:
Sinabi niya na pagarahe na siya kaya hindi niya kami maihahatid pero sumabay na lang daw kami hanggang sa pupuntahan niya kasi doon din naman daw ang daan namin at malapit na lang, for free.
(He told us he was about to end his shift so he won’t be able to drive us, but he said he can drop us off at his destination because it’s on the way. He offered us a ride for free.)
When they got in, Poy realized that the driver is a soldier. He’s on his way to Camp Aguinaldo, and he drives a cab at night to earn extra income. The driver said he needed the money because he has three kids in college, another in high school, and an adopted daughter. At the end of the ride, Poy offered to pay for the ride but the driver refused.
