HAIR’s Some News: Woman Makes Wig Out of Her Fallen Hair

A lot of us have dealt with the whole hair-in-the-shower-drain situation… or anywhere else for that matter. But before you start panicking about going bald, don’t be.

According to Healthline, hair fall (to a certain extent) is actually normal. In fact, you lose about 50 to 100 strands per day, and if your hair is long, it’s more noticeable. While it sounds scary, remember that you have about 100,000 hair follicles on your scalp, so this number isn’t really a big deal.

The normal reaction upon finding these stray hairs is to throw it away. But one woman, a 34-year old background actor from Brooklyn who goes by the name Liz Lele did the unthinkable: she collected her fallen hair!

Dubbed as the #showerhairchallenge, this all started when Lele wanted to investigate something that she’s been wondering about for years: just how much hair was she losing in a day? Eventually, she started collecting fallen strands from washing and brushing her hair, along with the random ones that just fell out of nowhere.

“After a few months, it became the size of a hair extension,” Lele said in an interview with Buzzfeed. “I tried to make it into a hair extension via sewing machine, but it fell apart, so I rebuilt it. And then I decided to learn wig ventilation and make it into a wig to donate. I didn’t have enough hair, so people from TikTok donated via my P.O. Box. I have about 4,000 hairs right now.”

Lele’s goal is to donate the finished wig to someone in need. However, this make take a while, even with the hair contributions from her followers. Not only is it very tedious, but Lele adds that occasionally her hands, back, and eyes would hurt from doing this.

“It’s a lot harder than I imagined, but I love the results. It’s beautiful,” Lele said.
