‘What We Do in the Shadows’: Vampire Comedy at Its Finest

I recently wrote about a great series to watch during quarantine. Well, here’s another one that’s worth watching… but which goes in the opposite direction.

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ is a comedy documentary about four vampires and one vampire familiar living in Staten Island. We have Nandor the Relentless with his vampire familiar Guillermo, the husband and wife vampires of Laszlo Cravensworth and Nadja, and the energy vampire Colin Robinson who is basically human like Guillermo.

The series pits these anachronistic vampires in a modern landscape, which results in hilarious situations. The series is based on the movie of the same name directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, who are also executive producers of the series.

I actually started watching this show after Mark Hamill raved about it on his Instagram account. It’s currently on FX and has yet to make it to Netflix. If you’re lucky enough to be able to watch it, you’ll be treated to less than half an hour of an intelligent mockumentary. This show is funny as hell. Every so often, I found myself laughing out loud when the vampires interacted in the real world with their outdated fashion sense and social practices.

The show isn’t just about vampires, though. It’s a supernatural comedy in the horror genre, which makes it an ironic delight. You will see aspects of the supernatural in the show, such as werewolves, ghosts, and the like.

The series is presented in documentary style, which allows the characters to break the fourth wall. The camera crew is oftentimes drawn into wacky situations, and the overall feel of comedy permeates in spite of the danger associated with vampires poses.

There are a lot of cameo appearances in the show that add to the vampiric charm of the series, too. ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ basically provides enough laughs that will leave you thirsting for more.

Out of all of the characters in the show, Laszlo is my favorite. His British background coupled with his aristocratic flair makes him funnier to me. He feeds off of his vampiric wife Nadja well, and together, they create some outrageous dialogues. There’s a character for everyone here, and you’ll have to discover which one tickles your fancy as the show progresses.

The situations that these vampires are put in present a very important socio-cultural point. What happens when people remain stuck in their ways and are too stubborn to change with the times? In this case, the vampire characters show how this can be a sad state of affairs in the funniest of ways. ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ makes you think twice when it’s time to change practices that have become outmoded. Otherwise, the camera will document your downfall for all eternity.

When you get the chance, put ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ on your binge-watching list. With the second season currently ongoing, it will be easy to catch up to this vampire mockumentary. Take a bite and be charmed into watching this supernatural comedy.
