When in Manila, looking for old vinyl records has proven to be very difficult ever since we entered the digital age. However, the lifestyle and experience of the old times still seem to be alive in the hearts of a few and it’s now blossoming once again, especially since Satchmi came to town!  To celebrate their love for records, awesome music and a taste of the old-school lifestyle, Satchmi held their second Vinyl Day together with new albums, talented indie bands and definitely, an even bigger crowd than the last.

Satchmi, an online store who resurrected the vinyl fever, entertained the people who were in Bonifacio High Street last April 26 with music and lots and lots of vinyl records. My sister and I had been waiting for this event since we didn’t get to attend the first Vinyl Day held on the same venue. It started at 4pm and unfortunately, we arrived late and we missed the awesome performances of Up Dharma Down and June Marieezy who kicked off the afternoon with soulful tunes. Read our coverage of June Marieezy’s concert here: Meraki: Maidens of Sound at BGC

When we arrived, we saw a lot of vinyl hunters, seriously digging through the awesome collections that Satchmi had prepared. They had an amazing array of records from different genres and decades there. In one box, you could find something from the classic rock era like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Queen and David Bowie, and then in the other boxes, you could find modern music gems like FUN, She and Him, Adele, Panic! at The Disco and many more. There were also a bunch of album compilations like Christmas songs and Motion Pictures soundtracks available. It was just a smorgasbord of amazing music and as a music fan; it was definitely heaven on earth for me!

After  Marieezy’s performance, the band called Farewell Fair Weather took centerstage and rocked the house. It was my first time to hear the band live and I was blown away. I always knew that many Filipinos are talented musicians, but this band and the others that came after them like Slow Hello, Ang Bandang Shirley, Taken by Cars, Dearest, She’s Only Sixteen, Ciudad, Jensen and The Flips and The Strangeness made me realize how incredibly amazing our indie music scene really is. It makes me happy to see our music industry evolve into something more creative and more beautiful than ever.

DJ Diego Castillo shows the crowd his craft

Diego Castillo, an internationally acclaimed DJ, also wowed the audience with his mad skills. I was amazed with the way he transitioned from one song to another so smoothly and his selections of songs were just impressive! I was never a fan of that kind of music or disc jockeying, but this guy totally changed my mind.

Another  one of the highlights of the night, aside from the massive collection of vinyl records and live music acts, was letting the audiences listen to the records using Satchmi’s very own handcrafted turntable called the Motorino. I tried listening to a CHVRCHES record on it and man; I didn’t want to take the headphones off because the sound was just so beautiful and crisp. Somehow, when you hear a song on vinyl, whether it is an old record or not, it gives you a certain chill down the spine and makes you want to share the experience with everyone you know.

Motorino works its magic

Want to know the features of Satchmi’s Motorino? Then check out this post https://www.wheninmanila.com/motorino-by-satchmi-the-vinyls-are-back/ to find out more.

After the fantastic live music show, Satchmi gave away a Motorino starter kit and gift certificates to one lucky member of the audience and they also gave away lots of other freebies throughout the night. I didn’t win, but if I had, I’d probably spend half of my days listening to vinyl records at home and do absolutely nothing else.

Slow Hello rocks out loud!

True enough, music does amazing things to us all like making us dive into a new lifestyle far away from the gadgets and downloads. Just like what Satchmi says: “Nobody remembers their first download but everyone remembers their first record.” Satchmi’s Vinyl Day 2014 was indeed an amazing blast to past but hopefully, the music, lifestyle and experience of good old vinyl records and turntables stay  with us and continue to grow into the next generation.
