Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants has once again hailed Toyo Eatery as one of its best restaurants this 2020, the sole Filipino establishment to make it to the list.

Toyo Eatery, helmed by chef Jordy Navarra, placed 44th this year which is a spot lower than last year when they placed 43rd. The restaurant is known for its tasting menus and ala carte options that showcase traditional Filipino ingredients through unique and modern presentations.
“Taking inspiration from their Filipino heritage, the Navarras champion their cultural roots into a truly innovative menu,” said William Drew, director for content at 50 Best, during the awards show on Tuesday.

The list was decided upon by a total of 300 experts across Asia. Restaurants at the top 10 were from countries Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and Thailand.
The award-giving body made the announcement through its online awarding event, which they clarified was “not a celebration” but a way to extend support to the restaurant industry amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“This time, more than ever, the restaurant sector needs support, and recognizing the hard work and talent of teams and individuals remains valid,” Drew explained.
“The decision to proceed [with the awards show] was made after consulting with chefs and restaurateurs, and other leading figures in gastronomy across Asia,” he added. “So today is about supporting Asia.
The list and awards aim to offer some small rays of positivity even in these dark days.”
“Let’s keep our community connected, united, and prepare for recovery once the situation improves.”
