After much discussion, the IOC and Tokyo 2020 have decided it is best to postpone the Olympics amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly after the announcement of the new dates for the Tokyo Olympics, the countdown clocks to the games was reset for July 23 next year.

With the Olympics now set to happen from July 23 until August 8, 2021, the iconic Olympic countdown clock outside Tokyo Station now reads “479 days.” Other countdown clocks across the capital have also reset after the announcement of the new dates.

Along with postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the organizers also announced that The Paralympic Games will take place from August 24 until September 5, 2021. With this, the organizers clarify that even with the postponement of the games to next year, the Olympics will still be called “Tokyo 2020.”

The IOC and Tokyo 2020 have mentioned that it is best to postpone the Olympics to next year to protect the health of the athletes and everyone involved.
