If there’s one thing I’m thankful for when I’m stuck in traffic, is that I get to see what’s around me. I was able to “catch-up” and listen to the news programs on the radio.
While I was listening to the program, the driver (I think) couldn’t contain his thoughts anymore. He sadly said in Tagalog but now translated into English: “This isn’t the problem of the people working for the office anymore; it’s about “leadership. It’s how they manage the people and anticipate things.”
How will you lead the country if you can’t even follow simple instructions?
But before we proceed, let me put a disclaimer first: I am neither a political analyst nor a lawyer. I am just a mom and a Filipino citizen like you, who is keen to have a better future for my family and fellow countrymen. Whilst I would refrain from commenting on politics, this article doesn’t matter in that instance as I’m talking about my personal opinion about Leadership, definitely NOT the policy. Therefore, the candidates and situations mentioned here are purely personal and no intentions of hurting anyone.

Do you agree with what the driver said? Do you somehow think, that it is the lack of leadership that’s bringing us down?
Admittedly, I did agree with him. In fact, we exchanged thoughts about the common problems normal citizen experience like traffic, corruption, discrimination, and poverty.
However, I later realized that these authorities, who are currently serving our administration wouldn’t be running the show if we didn’t let them. In short, we, too, are at fault because we voted them. We believed that the “person” has the ability to manage the nation.
Interestingly, we can change this. Just like the saying goes, “it takes two to tango.” This coming election, we must do our part as well, in choosing our new set of leaders next year.
Imagine, our country is like the Mt. Everest. Do you think our current leaders would have a successful expedition without our help?
In an article shared by a known mountaineer and leadership speaker in Australia, Patrick Hollingworth, he shared his nine key things to do and nine questions that every person, especially leaders, should consider answering before anything else.
Patrick has categorized the questions into three principles (Get Ready, Get Set, Go). Although, they are designed for corporate teams, I thought that these questions will definitely help us gauge who’s who and which is which.
Here are the following questions:
Get Ready – these are the questions our future leaders and we must answer to ensure the sturdiness of our foundation. This way the team will understand the style, approach, which is essential to get the job done.
Questions:
How will we do it?
Who’s on board?
What’s out there?
Get Set – these are the questions that will put everyone to work together. The ultimate goal is for the future leader to run with compassion and solidarity.

Where are we going?
What’s in it for us?
What are the risks?
Go – these are the questions once the new term has begun.
Questions:
How will we keep going?
What have we learned?
What’s next?
Specifically, our future President will have six (6) years to prove that he’s worthy of our trust. And one thing I’m sure of, that a massive change couldn’t be done overnight. It is, however, doable if we do change our leadership style, one move at a time. Let’s not categorize the candidates according to their education status, religious beliefs, or the number of years served in our country, as they are just the same as the so-called ‘nuisance’ candidates. These current leaders have also caused us inconvenience and annoying circumstances, so let’s not judge.
Furthermore, basic leadership is not that hard. I believe that “sa tamang panahon” (right time) and if we are disciplined enough to follow simple rules, we will get there.
Friends, five months from now, we will once again choose leaders we think will HELP us blossom and will lift us from this chaotic environment.
We will be filled with “hope” (again) that these future leaders will demonstrate ingenuity, integrity, and credibility.
Remember, our angst against the government wouldn’t change anything unless we are disciplined as well.
On a lighter note, we need someone like him.
